« In theory, electric power is so far superior for this purpose to any internal combustion engine that the technology of applying it will undoubtedly be worked out. At present, there is no electrical system that can compete in terms of practicality with existing gas engines. But during the past few industries_oil, chemical, and electric, among others. Something is almost certain to be developed, whether it be a compact storage device, the production of electricity by a chemical converter, or by solar, atomic, or some other form of energy.

An example of a chemical converter is the fuel cell that is already in use to operate radar and other communications devices. In a fuel cell oxygen and a hydrocarbon_hydrogen, alcohol, or petroleum gas_react, silently and without combustion, to set up a current of electricity. Solar batteries exist that covert sunlight to electrical energy. Atomic batteries are being used in space satellites. But all of these are rather "far out" as potential sources of automotive power. Perhaps not so remote is a lightwheight, rechargeable storage battery capable of producing enough power to propel a modern car. In the past few years tremendous advances have been made in developing this type of battery. It is now sparking great changes in the electrical appliance field. Edison Electric Institute has been developing a high-energy battery capable of storing large amounts of power to propel such vehicles as multistop delivery trucks.»
